Dell is usually at the forefront of innovation, but what sets them apart from many other brands is their ability to keep prices relatively low when possible. As one of the heavier models Dell has made, it’s not particularly portable, but there would be nothing stopping you from carrying it around if you could handle the weight. It’s got plenty of tech, hardware, and software that makes it a dream for gamers and because you can upgrade as you wish, there’s really no limit to what you can do with the 15 7559.

Top Specs

The Dell Inspiron 15 7559 is a laptop made for multimedia and gaming at a basic level, and they never intended for this to be a serious gaming rig. When it was released it was reasonably priced at just under $800 and had plenty of notable features.

Windows 10 operating system;

Intel Core i5-6300HQ Quad Core Processor;

2.4GHz with 3.2GHz turbo available;

15.6-inch FHD display;

Antiglare 1920×1080 screen and backlit display;

1TB storage and 8GB DDR3L onboard memory;

Nvidia GeForce GTX 960M graphics;

15.07 x 10.43 x 0.99” dimensions;

Weighs 5.67 pounds;

Like other Dell laptops, you do have the option to spend extra and get an upgraded system. As the laptop is now a few years old, it may even be possible to get one that’s been refurbished with these upgrades, but it would depend on availability.

Design and Feel

Upon first glance at the Inspiron 15 7559, you might think it looks larger than a 15-inch laptop, and it does feel a little heavier at just under 6 pounds. However, rest assured it’s the same as other 15 inch devices but just with an angular design that makes it look bigger than it is.

Made with black plastic exterior but notable red features of the Dell logo throughout as well as a stylish trim around the speaker, fan, and touchpad means this is sleek and professional. Although plastic on the outside, you’ll notice some soft but durable rubber on the keyboard deck and top deck which makes it easier to use as well.

For gamers, the touch and feel of the keyboard are paramount to how well you play. The good news with this laptop is there’s no need to buy an external keyboard because it’s quality enough. You’ll get white backlighting, a smooth but durable touchpad, and high-quality keys that are quite responsive when you need them to be.

The touchpad is a standout thanks to the textured surface that makes it easier to grip but also gives you freedom of movement. However, it’s not always as responsive as you’d hope for. If you’re using this for gaming and require the use of a mouse that switched on, it might be best to invest in a separate accessory for it.

Sound and Speakers

If you’re like most laptop owners and plan on using your device for things like watching movies, streaming videos, or playing games, the sound will be an important factor. This laptop features an integrated subwoofer which does help to some degree, but when you put the volume up to the maximum you’ll find the sound getting a little tinny.

There’s also a distinct lack of bass which can affect the sound overall, so if you’re planning on gaming or watching movies you might even want to upgrade the speakers or use designated headphones. Overall though, it’s a pretty crisp and clear sound so it’s certainly sufficient when you keep the level at mid-range.

Connectivity and Communication

One area where this laptop lacks is the connectivity options. Don’t go expecting anything out of the ordinary here as you’ll only find a few USB 3.0 ports, SD slot, headphone jack, Ethernet port, Kensington lock slot, and an HDMI 11.4 output. This should be enough for basic operations but if it’s not, you’ll need to do some serious upgrades.

The huge bonus that this laptop offers is the maintenance cover which means you can do as you please with its insides. From there, you can remove, replace, upgrade or do whatever you want with the battery, Wi-Fi module, SSD, RAM slots, and HDD. With all of these being accessible, you can transform this laptop into so much more.

In terms of communication, you’ll get an Intel Dual-Band Wireless AC 3165 system which is pretty good quality and Bluetooth 4.0. With a 2.4GHz band you shouldn’t have an issue connecting, but if need be, you can also connect to other 5 GHz networks. This means gaming on the go is possible, provided you’re not weighed down by the 6lbs construction of the Dell Inspiron 15.

Display and Visuals

There’s no point having a gaming device if the display is no good, and luckily Dell has put a lot of effort into making sure this one looks superb. With a 15.6 inch display and 1080 resolution, it’s more than capable of playing most of your favorite titles on a pretty good quality setting.

Although there are other laptops out there that have a higher resolution, the hardware inside this one makes it acceptable. The screen isn’t touch sensitive, but you can get a model with this for another $100. For gamers though, this isn’t usually a deal breaker so it won’t matter much to the display or gameplay.

Battery Life, Noise, and Heat

Gamers aren’t usually the type to spend just an hour using their laptop and then retire it for the evening. We like to game for hours on end and long into the night, so having something with low noise factor and reduced heat is important.

The Dell Inspiron 15 7559 delivers in both of these areas. Even after hours of use and running at the highest power, it’s whisper quiet. The fan does its job and then some, so you don’t have to worry about overheating even when it’s being pushed to the limits.

Dell claims you’ll get over 11 hours of battery life from this model which may be true in some circumstances, but not when gaming. With some intense gaming, you’ll probably get three hours maximum out of a single charge so it could be good for traveling only if you can get to a power source at some point.

Performance and Benchmarks

If you’re looking to use the Dell Inspiron 15 7559 for gaming, its performance will be of utmost importance to you. As a general laptop made for work, home, and a lot of entertainment, it can certainly perform as you’d hope.

This laptop, in its base model, has a 2.3 GHz sixth generation Intel Core i5-6300HQ processor and 8GB of memory. For the graphics side of things, it’s equipped with a Nvidia GeForce GTX 960M graphics card, so it’s pretty serious when compared to others in its price range.

When compared to the other systems you can get for this cost, it scored pretty well in tests that we discovered. One notable one was that it beat the Acer V 15 Nitro which actually costs around $1,200 so that’s something to keep in mind if money is important to you.

Looking at gaming specifically, this laptop is pretty capable of playing new generation games, although not always on the highest setting. When compared to others that are similar, like the Alienware 15 and Acer V Nitro, it came close or beat both of them. For something of this price, that’s usually unheard of.

Alienware 15 ANW15-5350SLV 15.6" Gaming Laptop -...
  • Intel Core i7-4710HQ Processor (6M Cache, 2.5 GHz)
  • 16 GB DDR3 RAM
  • 1 TB 5400 rpm Hard Drive, 128 GB Solid-State Drive
  • 15.6Inch Screen, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M with 3GB GDDR5
  • Windows 8.1

With the more intense games, we were able to achieve around 24fps, so if you consider the 30fps mark to be smooth, this indicates that it’s lacking somewhat. However, there would be nothing stopping you from playing these on a medium setting and still getting an enjoyable experience out of the newer titles.

Who Would Suit this Laptop?

Dell has designed this laptop to be pretty capable in all areas and even has the goods to satisfy gamers. In terms of who it would suit best, there’s really no limit in that regard. It’s got everything you need for a powerful business machine and also lets you enjoy some gaming in the evenings, so it can tick more than one box.

Although Dell has put enough hardware in here to make this an entry-level gaming machine if you’re a serious gamer who likes to play the latest titles you might be seeking an upgrade. Whether you do that yourself, buy a model that’s been adapted more to your needs, or simply seek out a more expensive and capable laptop is up to you.

When it was released, this laptop cost less than $800 which even by today’s standards is pretty good. This is one of those cases where it’s proved that you don’t have to spend thousands just to get a quality gaming laptop, and although it might not be as impressive as some serious gaming machines, it’s definitely got what it takes to make most of us happy.

The Verdict

Dell has proven, yet again, that they know how to please their target market. When reviewing this laptop as the device it was intended to be, a mid-price, entry-level gaming machine, it certainly gets good marks.

Comparing this to more serious gaming desktop PCs or laptops wouldn’t be fair to do, as Dell never claimed this was the market they were trying to dominate. However, given that it’s been a few years since its release now and the price would have dropped a significant amount since then, it’s well worth a look.

It’s rare these days to find a laptop that allows for as must adjustment and upgrade as this, thanks to its special maintenance hatch. This feature alone should make it even more of a standout to gamers, so this point is definitely worth considering if you’re looking for a gaming machine you can take to the next level.
