144Hz vs 240Hz: Which Refresh Rate is Best?

144Hz vs 240Hz What’s the better? Are you thinking of replacing your 144Hz gaming screen with a 240Hz model? Are you thinking about upgrading to 240Hz instead of your 60Hz display? We’re here to help you decide if 240Hz is worth the effort.

Gaming at 240Hz is incredibly fluid and smooth. The jump from HTML144Hz up to 240Hz isn’t nearly as noticeable as the change from 60Hz to 120Hz .

While 240Hz will not give you an advantage over other players or make you a better player it will make your gameplay more immersive and enjoyable.

If you’re not getting more than 144 FPS from your video games, you don’t need a 240Hz screen unless you’re planning on upgrading your computer.

What are Refresh Rates?

Let’s start with the most basic question: What is a refresh rate?

A display’s refresh rate is simply how often it can refresh the image displayed on it. A monitor with a refresh rate of 60Hz refreshes the image 60 times per second, for instance.

This also affects the number of frames per second that a monitor can display. A monitor can display as many frames as your graphics card will allow, but only at 60 refresh rates.

Here are the 144Hz- and 240Hz-monitors.

240Hz vs 144Hz Monitors

You should also consider the screen resolution, panel type and adaptive-sync technology when purchasing a high refresh gaming monitor.

Currently, only 1080p and 1440p monitors can have a refresh rate of 240Hz. However, you can get a 4K resolution 144Hz gaming monitor at a lower price.

This is only one aspect of the story. You also need to consider whether your monitor should have a variable refresh rate, such as freeSync or G–SYNC, or some motion blur reduction via backlight stroking — either one or both.

These technologies are also available in 144Hz and 244Hz, which has an impact on the price.

Even 360Hz gaming screens offer a noticeable improvement in motion clarity, but not as much as the leap from 240Hz.

They are however much more expensive and are aimed primarily at professional gamers. The difference between 360Hz and 240Hz is unlikely to be significant for an average gamer.

Is Your GPU able to handle it?

Even at 144Hz or 240Hz, this is something you should ask yourself. These monitors will not give you a framerate that is worthy of your money.

Run a benchmark to see how your graphics card does in certain games. Many games include benchmarks. However, it’s not necessary to use third-party programs. You can still check how your GPU performs in average.

Are You able to afford it?

144Hz monitors tend to be more expensive than 60Hz counterparts. The 240Hz monitors are the most expensive.

Assuming that you can see the benefits of the 60Hz version, and that you can distinguish the differences, you will decide if they are worth the investment.

Conclusion

What is the bottom line? If you’re a professional FPS player or a hardcore fan, you will likely be open to any improvements that can be made to your game. A 240Hz monitor would be a worthwhile upgrade.

For casual gamers, a 144Hz refresh speed is more than likely enough, especially considering how challenging games at 240FPS can be with decent settings.
